2016 Jadot Gev Chamb Estournelles St. Jacques

"I cannot recall tasting a better young vintage of Estournelles St. Jacques from Maison Jadot than this outstanding 2016 which is very very close in quality to the Clos St. Jacques this year! The bouquet is precise and sappy delivering scents of red and black cherries grilled meats stunningly complex minerality raw cocoa woodsmoke mustard seed and a deft touch of spicy oak. On the palate the wine is deep full-bodied and very pure with a sappy core stunning mineral drive and a long seamless and vibrant finish. The tannins here are fine-grained and 100 beautifully integrated and this wine is going to be stunning when it is fully mature. 2026-2070+."

"Brilliant mid ruby with plenty of energy plumper fruit than Lavaux and more floral which Frédéric Barnier says is always the case. This is a very elegant wine with a lovely finish. " -Jasper Morris

Bright full red. Less floral and high-pitched on the nose than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques and not currently showing that wine's crushed-stone minerality. In a more medicinal muscular style conveying a strong impression of punch but not the delicacy or detail of the Lavaux. Rich and filled in but more about savory minerality and soil tones than flowers and spices. It's possible that this sample was drawn from a less-fresh barrel; I look forward to following up on this wine from bottle next year.

From bottle the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing beautifully offering up a youthful but expressive bouquet of dark wild berries currant leaf coniferous forest floor and subtle hints of peony. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied ample and satiny with a generous core of cool sappy fruit melting tannins and a beautifully defined finish. It's a beautifully complete elegant Estournelles Saint-Jacques that confirms its terrific performance from barrel. While it's sufficiently supple to be approachable now a decade of patience will be rewarded by considerably greater complexity.
