98-100 Points Wine Advocate

The 2019 Mourvèdre is a barrel sample blend of 81% Mourvèdre, 18% Syrah and 1% Viognier, coming from Alta Mesa vineyard (Santa Barbara County), Bien Nacido vineyard (Santa Maria), Larner vineyard (Ballard Canyon), and G2 vineyard (Ballard Canyon). The wine was vinified using 75% whole cluster and aged for around 21 months in 50% new French oak barrique and 600-liter demi-muid and 50% used French barrique. The alcohol is 15.5%. Opaque purple-black, it slowly unfurls in the glass to reveal tantalizing scents of prunes, boysenberry preserves, crushed blackberries and espresso with hints of roasted nuts, aniseed, black truffles and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, the palate is solidly constructed of firm yet wonderfully ripe tannins and alluring freshness lifting the densely packed layers to and epically long, fantastically earthy finish. Spectacular Mourvedre!

Few out there do this variety better than Jim Binns, and the 2019 Mourvedre is stunning stuff, offering classic smoked meats, iron, ground pepper, kirsch, and darker fruits. I love its tannins, it’s full-bodied, and has richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness, followed by a great finish. The blend is 81% Mourvedre, 18% Syrah, and 1% Viognier that saw lots of stems (75%) and will spend 21 months in 50% new wood.
