As readers may remember, Bouley's tiny parcel of more than 60-year-old vines in the southern part of this climat, where the soils are lighter, was always included in his communal level Vieilles Vignes cuvée; but over the last few years, his viticulture has rehabilitated it to the extent that it's capable of producing a small standalone cuvée of two barrels. The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans is a worthy follow up to the superb inaugural 2022 release, bursting with notes of orange zest, petals, sweet berries and spices. Medium- to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and complete, with a cool core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish.
